Dhamma for Lifestyle (15)

Conceit (Mana) that pulls down to Apaya

Conceit is being arrogant. It is the most powerful force among those bad ones that pull down human to Apaya. Three types of conceit can be seen: conceit because of having, non- having and being equal.
Nine causes of conceit are:
1. class (standard)
2. lineage
3. education
4. health
5. age
6. being alive
7. appearance
8. possession
9. attendant (follower)
Precisely, these causes of conceit are the results of merits done in the past existence. Instead of being conceit, we should consider to do more merits at present to be adequate in all requirements in future life. Only religious works can control of being conceit. We must perform Dana, Sila and Bhavana as much as we can. Other wise, we will surely be pull down to Apaya by conceit.

54: The scent of flowers cannot go against the wind; nor the scent of sandalwood, nor of rhododendron (tagara), nor of jasmin (mallika)2; only the reputation of good people can go against the wind. The reputation of the virtuous ones (sappurisa) is wafted abroad in all directions.
55: There are the scents of sandalwood, rhododendron, lotus and jasmin (vassika)3; but the scent of virtue surpasses all scents.

Dhamma Facts (20)

Udana (Inspired Utterance [after] Self-Awakening)

Anekajatisamsaram, sandhavissam anibbisam;
gahakaram gavesanto, dukkha jati punappunam.

I, who have been seeking the builder of this house (body), failing to attain Enlightenment (Bodhi nana or Sabbannuta nana) which would enable me to find him, have wandered through innumerable births in samsara. To be born again and again is, indeed, dukkha!

Gahakaraka ditthosi, puna geham na kahasi;
sabba te phasuka bhagga, gahakotam visankhatam;
visankharagatam cittam, tanhanam khayamajjhaga.

Oh house-builder! You are seen, you shall build no house (for me) again. All your rafters are broken, your roof-tree is destroyed. My mind has reached the unconditioned (i.e., Nibbana); the end of craving (Arahatta Phala) has been attained.
