Dhamma for Lifestyle (30)

Vijja and Carana are like a bird

Birds look the direction with their eyes and fly with their wings. They perch and hold with their feet. With their beaks they pick fruits and flowers. Without these birds cannot survive for long.

Similarly, in the Buddhist Sasana, the taste of Magga, Phala and Nibbana can be enjoyed only on the perfection of Vijja (knowledge) and Carana (the good practice). In the absence of either one, Magga, Phala and Nibbana cannot be realized.

The eyes of the birds are also like the belief in the effect of Kamma. The knowledge of the Noble one is the beak. These are parts or members of Vijja. The foot and the wing may be likened to morality and concentration being association with Carana, the good practice.

Dhammapada 87-89 [Khuddaka Nikaya]

6 - Panditavagga, The Wise
11 - Pancasata Agantukabhikkhu Vatthu

Kanham dhammam vippahaya, sukkam bhavetha pandito;
oka anokamagamma, viveke yattha duramam.
Tatrabhiratimiccheyya, hitva kame akincano;
pariyodapeyya attanam, cittaklesehi pandito.
Yesam sambodhiyangesu, samma cittam subhavitam;
adanapatinissagge, anupadaya ye rata;
khinasava jutimanto, te loke parinibbuta.
87 & 88: The man of wisdom, leaving the home of craving and having Nibbana as his goal, should give up dark, evil ways and cultivate pure, good ones. He should seek great delight in solitude, detachment and Nibbana, which an ordinary man finds so difficult to enjoy. He should also give up sensual pleasures, and clinging to nothing, should cleanse himself of all impurities of the mind.
89: Those, with mind well-developed in the seven Factors of Enlightenment (bojjhanga), having rid themselves of all craving, rejoice in their abandonment of attachment. Such men, with all moral intoxicants eradicated, and powerful (with the light of Arahatta Magganana), have realized Nibbana in this world (i.e., with Khandha aggregates remaining).

Dhamma for Lifestyle (29)

Two wolves inside one

An old grandfather is teaching his grandson about life. “A fight is going on inside me,” he said to the boy.
It is a terrible fight and it is between two wolves.

One id Evil_ it is anger, envy, sorrow, regret, greed, arrogance, self-pity, guilt, resentment, laziness, inferiority, lies, false pride, superiority and ego.” He continued,
“The other is Good_ it is joy, peace, love, hope, serenity, humility, kindnes, benevolence, apathy, generosity, truth, wisdom, compassion and faith.
The same fight is going on inside you and inside every person, too.”

The grandson thought about it for a minute and then asked his grandfather,
“Which wolf will win?”
The grandfather simply replied,
“The one you feed.”

Sharing of Merit (Pattidana)

Making a wish that whatever merit that one may have earned by performing a good deed be shared with others so that they might profit equally is the concept of sharing of merit.
Not only is the amount of merit that one earns not lessened by this transfer, but others stand to gain the same amount that one has earned.

Five Supporting Factors

If young trees are planted, one needs to fence, water, clear old roots and weeds. Also, insects and webs are to be removed. It certainly is to be done always.
For one:
Sila and fencing,
Knowledge and watering,
Discussion and weeding,
Samatha and insect-clearing,
Vipassana and webs-moving,
These are alike and similar.

Dhamma for Lifestyle (26)

Find Liberation

A sinful man is like a poisonous tree which will injure every one who lean on it.
Transgressors are like frost-bitten peas and spoiled fat that will ruin every thing.
Samsara is like a poisonous thorn in a flesh. The poison will increase and spread if not pulled out.
The law of Karma is like Samsara wheel. Whoever breaks it will suffer a great loss.
You will feel much pain, if misfortunes attack you.
Pleasure are precarious like bathing in the sun.
The woes of life succeed one another, like the sea's incessant waves_one has barely passed, before the next one takes its place.
Until you are liberated, pain and pleasure come and go at random, like passerby encountered in the street.
Liberation mean peacefulness.
Peasants cultivate crops in the fields.
Like wise, meditators develop Dhamma knowledges.
Precisely, striving hard is the only way to have Liberation.

Dhamma For Lifestyle (25)

Why not Practise Meditation?

Youth is like a summer flower which suddenly fades away.
Old age is like a fire spreading through the fields which suddenly, its at your heels.
Sickness is like a little bird wounded by a sling.
You do not know which time your health and strength will desert you.
When you are strong and healthy, you never think of sickness coming.
But it descends with sudden force like a stroke of lightning.
Death resemble an oil-dry lamp, after its last flicker.
The coming of death is like the shadow of a tree at sunset. It runs fast and none can halt it.
The Buddha once said, “ Birth and death are like sunrise and sunset, now come, now go”.
Sickness, old age and death ever meet each other as do hands and mouth.
Nothing in this world is permanent.
Though Dhamma is the best source of victory, those who aspire to it are rare.
Remembering these things, why not practise meditation.

Dhammapada 78 [Khuddaka Nikaya]

6 - Panditavagga, The Wise
3 - Channatthera Vatthu
Na bhaje papake mitte, na bhaje purisadhame;
bhajetha mitte kalyane, bhajetha purisuttame.
78: One should not associate with bad friends, nor with the vile. One should associate with good friends, and with those who are noble.
